Action Through Education
With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to educate the IU community on the human rights violations occurring within North Korea and against its people. LiNKatIU hosts open events every semester and fundraises to support rescue missions for North Korean defectors.

CHARLES RYU: FINDING FREEDOM

After having lost his mother to starvation at the age of 11, Charles Ryu escaped from North Korea to China. in 2008, Charles was sent back to North Korea, interrogated, and sent to a political labor camp, where he worked 12 hours a day. The malnourished and ailing Charles was on the verge of death. After recovering, he decided to escape North Korea once again in 2012.

Daniel Whitmer of the Office of International Services spoke at our weekly meeting. He has worked extensively with North Korean refugees in China through an NGO called Mercy Corps and has been to North Korea three times.

Drew Kelly is an American writer, photographer, and independent marketing consultant. He lived as an expat in North Korea for four years teaching English and business at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. He is the co-curator of @EverydayDPRK and owner of @drewkelly on Instagram. COMPARATIVE REFUGEE STUDIES PANEL

No Lost Generation, Students for Peace in the Middle East, and Liberty in North Korea collaborated for our first annual Comparative Refugee Studies Panel. The topic of this year’s panel is durable solutions for refugees: voluntary repatriation, local integration and/or resettlement.
